New Muppet show planned

A new generation of Muppets is ready to take on prime time.

Jim Henson Television has partnered with producers Team Todd and the Fox network to develop a Muppet series that will feature a new crop of characters in addition to Kermit, Miss Piggy and other long-standing members of Henson's fuzzy troupe, the Hollywood Reporter says.

The project is still in the early stages of development, but the plan is to take a new approach to a Muppet series. It will not be a remake of the successful Muppet Show comedy-variety vehicle that aired in syndication from 1976-81.

Henson TV president Juliet Blake said the show will be "fabulous, edgy and audacious."

The Muppets also had a short-lived prime time comedy, Muppets Tonight, on ABC in 1996.

TV notes

Goldie Hawn has partnered with F/X to develop a movie about the passengers of United Flight 93, the hijacked jetliner that crashed in Pennsylvania on Sept. 11. The cable network and Hawn's Cosmic Entertainment have optioned an article from Vanity Fair's December issue to serve as the basis of the project, Variety says. In five vignettes, the piece titled "Manifest Courage" chronicled the interaction between victims and their families on the morning of Sept. 11, from the time they began their day until the flight crashed at 10:06 a.m. . . . Fox has quietly been putting out feelers to comics in the hope of grooming a late-night franchise, the Hollywood Reporter says. Among the candidates Fox has met with in recent weeks are D.L. Hughley, Orlando Jones and Tom Green. The network pursued Conan O'Brien before he re-upped with NBC last month. Fox officials would not comment.
