TENNIS

Central won its first match of the season on March 5, toppling Springstead 4-3.

The Bears (1-5) got wins at Nos. 1 (Curtis Gardiner), 2 (Jason Hayes), 3 (Walter Sedowsky) and No. 1 doubles (Hayes-Gardiner).

"We're doing a little bit better," Central coach Hank Deslaurier said. "We're very, very young, but we're getting some experience."

Eagles upset Mitchell

Springstead won for the first time. It beat Mitchell 6-1 and left the Mustangs at 5-5 and "livid," according to Eagles coach Louise Harres.

"They must have different strengths," Harres said. "They were quite angry."

Springstead (1-6) got victories at Nos. 1 (Leah Garcia), 2 (Jenna Pecsenka), 3 (Michelle Gimbel) and 4 (Laura Heslin). Garcia and Gimbel and Pecsenka-Heslin won in the No. 1 and 2 doubles positions.

The win furthered a week of good feelings in which the Eagles averted their customary 0-7 loss to Central. Gimbel cut the margin to 1-6, defeating Paula Nagarajan at No. 3.

"I am full of respect for Lecanto and Central, and in our eyes that was a victory," Harres said.

Because only Pecsenka plays all year, much of Harres' team is just now reaching form.

"I expect a better second half," she said.
