Man struck by car crossing road in LargoBy Times staff writer© St. Petersburg Times published March 13, 2002 LARGO -- A 19-year-old man was in "extremely critical condition" Tuesday after he was struck by a car on Clearwater-Largo Road on Monday afternoon. Police weren't releasing the man's name Tuesday because they hadn't reached all his family yet. Police said he was crossing Clearwater-Largo Road just north of West Bay Drive when he was struck by a silver Toyota. The driver of the car, Michael Wion, 24, of Palm Harbor was not at fault. He was arrested, however, for driving with a suspended driver's license. He was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on the misdemeanor charge, then was released after he posted $250 bail. Police said the 19-year-old was crossing the road about 4:20 p.m. with a 16-year-old friend. The pair were crossing eastbound from a Walgreens toward an Eckerds Drug Store. They crossed the southbound lanes, then the 16-year-old stopped in the median. But the 19-year-old darted into the northbound lanes in front of the Toyota, police said. He flew into the windshield and suffered severe head and internal injuries, police said. He was taken by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
