Letters to the EditorsParking lot on SR 52 would allow many to use bike path© St. Petersburg Times published March 13, 2002 Editor: I agree with the request for a bike path in the Green Key area. However, my request of the county is a very simple one. We live off State Road 52 approximately 5 miles from the new Suncoast Parkway bike path and we would love to make use of this trail. In order to do this we have to drive down to State Road 54 because there is nowhere to park at State Road 52. How about making a small parking area there with a portable bathroom? I'm sure I'm not the only person making this request.
Don't give in to adult clubs; hire attorneys to fight themEditor: Having Luke Lirot, a First Amendment attorney representing Joe Redner of Tampa fame, telling our county commissioners how to regulate (exempt them for the zoning ordinances) the adult clubs proliferating on U.S. 19 is reprehensible. In addition our commissioners have granted a $7,000 fee for a consultant, formerly employed by the county, whose zoning plans have now been trashed. I believe this to be a conflict of interests and the county should be using those dollars for hiring better attorneys/lawyers to combat these establishments. Paul Allen the Nightmoves magazine publisher states "we have the best attorneys we'll ever need." Firmer action needs to be taken in order that we don't have another stronghold for the sex industry.
Piping river water from Gulf would harm Florida wildlifeRe: Water piped from rivers would solve our problems, March 7 letter. Editor: Water piped from the Suwannee and Santa Fe rivers would do more harm than good. To divert large quantities of water from the rivers away from the Gulf of Mexico could have severe repercussions on wildlife, especially during periods of prolonged drought. Population growth will put intense pressure on the state's surface and ground water. Texas is facing the same problems as Florida and the method suggested by Mr. Meyer has been explored. For more insight read National Wildlife magazine, Dec./Jan. 2002 issue or see www.nwf.org.
It would be a shame to have Community Hospital razedEditor: They're talking about having Community Hospital razed if it moves. Why not use it as a senior citizens home, a congregate living center? They've spent a fortune renovating the building. It's a shame to have the facility to go to waste.
Was a traffic study done on U.S. 19 for Wal-Mart store? Editor: Regarding the traffic study relating to the construction of a new Catholic school and the extra traffic it would create on U.S. 19, I would like to know the result of the traffic study done (if any) for the construction of Wal-Mart Supercenter. It would be interesting to know the relationship. We do have a county government that is hard to decipher.
Our children would be safer if sexual predators locked upEditor: After reading about the little girl that was accosted on her way to the school bus, I looked on the Internet to see how many sexual predators we have in our area. We have 40 listed in the 34652 zip code and 20 listed in the 34691 zip code. All are out on supervision. Maybe if they were not released, our children could walk the streets safely at 8:30 a.m.
American Indians continue to be persecuted senselesslyEditor: It is not okay to teach children of an impressionable age that adults condone the stabbing murder of anyone. It is not okay to teach these same children that only Christianity is the true religion. This country was founded on the principle that all men (and women) are created equal. And our forefathers guaranteed us the right to practice any religion we choose, and this includes Native Americans who have been persecuted since this wonderful land was discovered and who continue to be persecuted through senseless plays and made-up myths. I am glad to see that at least one man, Daniel Callaghan, took the time out of his busy life to bring this issue into focus. I am even more please to see that as a result of this lawsuit and the years of protest by the American Indian Movement, that the Chasco Fiesta organizers and Native Americans are going to meet and discuss a more acceptable celebration. I hope that one year from now we will all have a better understanding of the Native American tradition and legends.
