Police seek motorist who hit boy on bicycleNEW PORT RICHEY -- Police are searching for a driver who hit a child riding a bicycle Monday night on Massachusetts Avenue. Shawn Kaimer, 8, was leaving the Kash n' Karry parking lot, crossing Massachusetts from south to north, about 8 p.m., said New Port Richey police Officer Jeff Harrington. Just west of Congress Street, an eastbound car slammed into Shawn, throwing him from his bike, Harrington said. The car drove away. Witnesses described it as a medium blue metallic Camaro or Firebird. It's a late 1980s model and has metallic vents in its back window, Harrington said. Police collected paint chips and pieces of the car at the scene, Harrington said. The boy suffered cuts and bruises and was flown to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, where he was treated and released, Harrington said. Shawn was wearing a helmet, Harrington said. "That most definitely saved him from serious, serious injury," Harrington said. Anyone with information should call the Police Department at (727) 841-4550 and ask for Harrington. The boy, who is not being named by the Times because of his age, faces felony charges of criminal mischief and obstruction of extinguishment of fire, deputies said. Two other children also face charges in the incident, according to a deputy's report. The report says the children smashed windows on cranes, stuck items into the crane motors and ran the motors until they stopped. In all, they did about $10,000 in damage to the cranes at Sunwest Mines, 16405 U.S. 19, the report says.
