Eight student musicians honored at piano festival

More than 80 Pinellas County music students participated in the St. Petersburg Music Teachers Association biannual piano festival in February at Eckerd College. The association recognized eight students for outstanding performances in a concert that saluted jazz, boogie and blues music.

Students receiving medals were Olivia Shi, Bauder Elementary; Jennie Lee, Ridgecrest Elementary; Craig Kile and Trevor Butts, Keswick Christian; Dylan Crane, Perkins Elementary; Jeremy Hasak, Bay Vista Fundamental; Sam Zakria, Seminole Middle School; and Stacy Mytnick, Seminole High.

Vocational center youths capture livestock awards

Students from Seminole Vocational Education Center competed successfully in several categories of livestock competition in February at the Florida State Fair in Tampa.

In the youth steer futurity show, Brittany Herrmann won first place in project weight gain. Students earning place awards were Jessica McQuade, third in class; Brittany Runyan, Ryan Miller and Cassandra Carvin, fourth in class; Michelle Kenney, fifth in class; and Brittany Herrmann and Tricia Cartier, sixth in class.

In beef carcass quality, Cassandra Carvin earned third place, Michelle Kenney earned sixth place, and Ryan Miller earned eighth place.

In the youth swine show, Corey Moyse and Cyndi Turnbull earned seventh in class and Brent Bardell earned ninth in class.

In the goat show, Vicki Ickes was first in class (breeding stock) grand champion; Heather Catanzaro was first in class (breeding stock) reserve grand champion; Shannon Schemkes earned a first-place award for market wether; and Tarah Frazier earned a second in class (breeding stock).

Students earning place awards in the showmanship and project placements division were David Rossignol and Leah Geoghegan, second in class; Laura Siegel, third in class; and Jennifer Loomis, fifth in class.

Michelle Kenney won a $500 WQYK scholarship for academic and Future Farmers of America leadership achievement.
