Letters to the EditorsLetters of thanks© St. Petersburg Times published March 14, 2002 Editor: A big thank you to Ridgewood's Fantastic "Interaction Group." This great group of teens and their moderator, Donna Leonard, should be publicly acknowledged for the very good work they have done and their many kindnesses they have given to us seniors in the building where we live in New Port Richey. They first visited us in October 2001 for a Halloween party and announced that they had "adopted" us and were going to come every other month to entertain us. They were going to intermingle with everyone and they sat in little groups of three or four of us and asked us about our lives and were very attentive listeners. Then they told us about themselves and their goals for the future and after a little while they would change places until we were all involved. We had fantastic communication with them even though some of our group were a couple of generations older. They brought sodas and snacks and even little gifts and Halloween candy and generally made our lives happier in the process, especially when they announced that they would return for a Christmas party, which we looked forward to and told them that we had a wonderful time with them. For the Christmas party they had song sheets and everyone joined in together and sang Christmas carols. They brought finger sandwiches that they made, cookies, candy and even a Christmas grab bag with beautiful gifts for all, but most of all was the wonderful way they had of making us feel important. In this day and age it seems that all we hear about are the teens that are acting up and I believe it's important that the good works being done at Ridgewood High School by this heart-warming group of young men and women and their instructor, Donna Leonard, be brought up so that maybe some other schools and groups would follow their kindness and visit other senior centers and spread good will there too! Our thanks again to everyone, we love all of you and what you have done to light up our lives!
Editor: The Center for Independence Inc. receives funds from United Way of Pasco. Those funds go toward helping adults with developmental disabilities have a meaningful day activity, retain a job, live on their own, receive transportation, live in a group home as a transition toward further independence, receive guardianship if needed, and most importantly, achieve their highest level of independence. All of the staff of the Center for Independence Inc., individuals we serve and their families would like to thank the employees of Pasco County Publix stores for their 2001 United Way contributions. Associates at the Pasco County Publix stores in Pasco raised more than $187,976, a 15 percent increase over last year. Publix corporate match brought the total to more than $321,800. Each person should be extremely proud of himself or herself for this contribution. We are certainly proud of you for setting such a great example.
Editor: The American Cancer Society would like to thank the hundreds of volunteers and sponsors who worked very hard last year to raise funds to provide the needed services for cancer patients and their families in Pasco County. Through their efforts, more than $255,000 was raised in Pasco County, $125,000 of that from the annual Relay For Life event last April at Gulf High School's athletic field. We also sincerely thank the many volunteers who donated their time and efforts. They provided needed services to the 1,100 new and recovering cancer patients. Volunteer drivers in our Road to Recovery program gave rides to and from treatment for over 450 cancer patients during 2001. More than 60 breast cancer patients had one-to-one consultations with breast cancer survivors in our Reach To Recovery program. The American Cancer Society's Gift Closet provided wigs, turbans and ostomy supplies to the many who needed them. Also, 14 support groups met every month in Pasco to help cancer survivors and families cope with the effects of this deadly disease. If you would like to volunteer to assist cancer patients, call Eileen Turner at (727) 863-1019, ext. 113. Teams and team captains are still needed for this year's Relay For Life scheduled on April 19-20 in New Port Richey. If you like to have fun fighting cancer, call Terry MacNeill at (727) 372-8728. Pasco County needs your help in the fight against cancer!
Editor: We wish to commend our dentist, Dr. Vincent Monticciolo of New Port Richey, for his kind acts on Valentine's Day. He is giving back to the community by free dental service on Valentine's Day. He is sharing his blessings for those less fortunate. We are proud to be his patients. He should be congratulated for this along with his staff. We think he is one great person.
Editor: I want to thank the best veterinarian I have ever found, Dr. Joe Imbergia. My dog Barbra Karvasales was dying and Dr. Joe said I could run tests and put Barbra through a lot of things. Joe could've told me anything and I would have done it. But he explained her liver enzymes were up and there was no hope in the most loving terms. I was heart sick, I couldn't bring myself to have her put to sleep and Dr. Imbergia was going to send someone to the house to give her a shot. The day they were coming Barbra passed away at 10 minutes til 4 p.m. It's been two years since Barbra has been gone. She was my daughter and Dr. Joe is the most loving person of animals. I want to thank his staff as they care so much about our kids as Dr. Joe does.
