Parade the pride of your kitchen, garden or studio
By MARY ANN KOSLASKY, Times Staff Writer Be it the photo you took of your cat, the quilt you created for your grandchild, the footlong carrots or the carrot cake you make that everybody loves, you take pride in your work. Why not share it? By entering your handiwork in the Adult World or Youth World exhibits at the Citrus County Fair, you can show your pride and perhaps win a ribbon or two while you're at it. Entry times for everything except for the Youth World category and baked goods and agriculture products are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. All Citrus County residents can enter. There is no entry fee. Categories include: clothing, creative arts, food preservations, needlework, quilting, fine arts, horticulture and wood sculpture. The creative arts category includes items such as ceramics, basketry, silk or dried floral arrangements, holiday ornaments and other craft items. The fine arts section is limited to original artwork. No paint by numbers or other kits will be accepted. Sculpture and pottery, as well as paintings, pen and ink and photography fall in the fine arts category. Paintings must be framed or matted and wired for hanging. Any painting not ready for hanging will be rejected. A new category is computer art. In the Adult World department judging will be done on the Danish System, and every item will receive the color of ribbon it deserves as judged against a standard product. Best of Show rosettes will be awarded at the discretion of the judges. A Top of Section prize will be awarded to the best product in the section, and a prize of $10 will be given to that winner. Youth World is open to Citrus County students in kindergarten through 12th grades. Entry hours are 2 to 7 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. As in Adult world, the judging is done on the Danish System. Monetary prizes will be awarded for blue, red and white ribbons. In Youth World participants also can be present during the judging Saturday, between 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. In this style of judging, the youth reviews the exhibit item with the judge. Judges ask questions, and participants can discuss the project and ask questions of the judge. In this way, participating youth get immediate positive feedback along with help in developing self-confidence in their work. Agriculture entries and baked goods may be entered only on Monday, between 8 and 10 a.m. Baked goods must be brought on disposable plates and covered with plastic or in a plastic bag. Each entry must be accompanied by a 3- by 5-inch card with the recipe. The name and complete address of the contestant must appear on the reverse side. No mixes may be used except in Class K, which is any item made with creative use of a mix. All display items must be picked up from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 24.
