BROOKSVILLE -- Organizers are hoping for good turnouts at two springtime events in downtown Brooksville on Saturday.

During the day, Brooksville Again, an organization of city businesses affiliated with the Hernando Historical Museum Association, and the city of Brooksville will sponsor the annual Spring Fest and Antiques, Collectibles and Hand Made Crafts Show.

After craft merchants have cleared from the front of the old Hernando County Courthouse, hot rods and '50s music will move in for an antique car show and sock hop from 6 to 9 p.m.

Both events will be on Main Street in downtown Brooksville between Jefferson and Broad streets.

Two years ago, the Spring Fest event fell by the wayside for lack of interest, but organizer Evelyn Duncan, who owns the Antiques Sampler on Main Street with her husband, Bill, said last year's event went very well.

"We are hoping for a lovely weekend," Duncan said. "This is such a community event, and it does a lot for our sense of community."

About 50 vendors will assemble on Main Street, a location that benefits downtown businesses.

"Brooksville has a lovely downtown," Duncan said. "This is a chance for people to take advantage of that.

"If people come and support this, we should have a very lively downtown."

Entertainment is scheduled throughout the day for the hundreds of people expected to turn out, said Duncan.

Hours for Spring Fest will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For information, call 797-9330.

Sponsored by the Heritage Museum, the car show and sock hop will be in memory of Doug Rupe, who was a friend to the organization, said museum president Jan Knowles.

Rupe, 60, the husband of Hernando County tourism development director Sue Rupe, died on Feb. 27. He was owner of Antique Doug's Auto Ranch, where he worked on custom cars.

"This was the best way we could think of to pay tribute to a friend like him," Knowles said.

Besides music and the antique car show, the event will feature hula hoop, bebop and limbo contests, plus music and refreshments. Admission is free. Call 799-0129.
