Sickles loses district game, dropping to 6-3 District 9 contestBy ROD GIPSON© St. Petersburg Times published March 17, 2002 First it was Plant, now Armwood. Sickles has had two key Class 4A, District 9 baseball contests the past two weeks and lost them both. The latest loss came Tuesday against Armwood. Pitcher Chris Delaney took the loss in a 4-1 defeat for the Gryphons. Sickles, which started the season 4-1 is now 6-3. But Sickles wasn't the only team to take a tough district loss. Wharton is now 2-8 overall after a 9-0 thumping Tuesday at the hands of Class 5A, District 8 rival King. Nick Cardieri, Brett Boggs and Josh Spivey each had hits but it wasn't nearly enough as the Lions' pitching dominated the game. In other action, Leto (4-4) got standout pitching and hitting from Sergio Perez to beat Alonso 7-6. Perez picked up the win to improve to 3-2 and added a double; but it took the Falcons' Roberto Bajon getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to send the winning run home. And Gaither is now 7-4 thisseason after Ty Taborelli's 2-run homer gave the Cowboys all the offense they would need in a 2-0 victory against Bloomingdale. SOFTBALL: Sickles and Chamberlain remain the best of the area and the state polls agree. Sickles is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A, receiving all 15 first-place votes on the latest poll. Chamberlain, meanwhile, is No. 3 on the Class 5A poll, garnering one first-place vote. On the field, Sickles trounced Armwood 20-0 Wednesday, picking up 22 hits in the process. Tiffany Clark had two home runs and Tiffany Stewart had a home run and a double for the Gryphons, who are 9-0. Chamberlain (10-1) strengthened its poll position with two shutouts, beating King and Leto by a combined score of 19-0. In defeating King 8-0, Chiefs' pitcher Toni Anderson allowed four hits and struck out four to improve to 2-0 on the season. In the Chiefs' 11-0 win against Leto, ace Amanda Cody allowed just three hits while improving to 5-0 on the season. SCHOLARSHIPS: Sickles soccer player Sarah Tummons has signed with Mercer University in Georgia. Tummons, a midfielder, helped lead Sickles to a state championship two seasons ago and deep into the state playoffs this past season. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
