Promising freshman is dismissed by USF

TAMPA -- The promising but troubled career of South Florida freshman forward Kelvin Brown is over.

"He has been dismissed from the team for failure to fulfill academic commitments," USF coach Seth Greenberg said.

Brown's replacement next season could be Dexter Lyons, a 6-5 sophomore small forward from Daytona Beach Community College. DBCC coach Frank Burnell said Lyons is planning four official visits in the coming weeks, beginning this weekend with Central Florida, followed by Memphis, Tennessee Tech and USF.

"I think right now he's pretty much wide open," Burnell said.

Lyons, a native of College Park, Ga., averaged 13.5 points and 6.6 rebounds this season, shooting 54 percent from the field. He was chosen All-Mid-Florida Conference in both seasons at DBCC.

"He's tenacious, a very, very tough kid. He plays extremely hard," Burnell said. "He can really defend and he can score."

Brown, from Fort Lauderdale Dillard, was suspended three times this season for academics and benched a fourth time for disciplinary reasons. He did not play after USF's 16th game, Jan. 16 against Memphis.

Brown (6 feet 7, 220 pounds) played 11 games, averaging 11.5 minutes, 4.1 points and 2.5 rebounds. He had seven points and a season-high seven rebounds Dec. 20 at Syracuse, and scored eight Dec. 8 against Florida.

The Bulls' top recruit this season, Brown played the most of USF's four freshmen early on and Greenberg praised his on-court performance. USF was 12-4 before his final suspension, 7-9 after.
