Wildcats, Bulldogs win titles

LAND O'LAKES -- The East Side Challenge proved to be no such thing to the Wesley Chapel boys and the surprising Zephyrhills girls, who won the Friday battle of east Pasco County teams at Gator Stadium.

The Wildcats continued their hot streak, winning their fifth meet of the season. Wesley Chapel took first in eight events, starting with Tim Davis' school-record 143-foot, 81/2-inch discus throw. He also finished runner-up in the shot put (43-41/2).

Kenny "Junior" Roberts won the 110-meter high hurdles (16.62) and the 300 intermediate hurdles (42.69).

Greg Harrison finished first in the pole vault (10-6). Kurt Able won the 1,600 (4:44) and David Forry won the 3,200 (11:09) and was third in the pole vault (9-6). Also winning were the Wildcats' 4x100 (44.87) and 4x800 (9:07) relay teams.

"It was an efficiently-run meet and an efficient win for us," Wesley Chapel coach Brian Colding said.

The Bulldogs, on the other hand, showed their new-found depth, riding seven second-place finishes to win. Tanya Bruton won the discus (93-41/2), Kristen Benedini won the 800 (2:37.31) and the 3,200 (13:47) and was second in the 1,600 (6:15).

Megan Pitts was second in the 100 high hurdles (18.44) and the 300 intermediate hurdles (55.19). Tiffany Tucker was second in the 100 (13.38) and third in the long jump (14-10). Renee Yonkoff was second in the 400 (62.90) along with the girls 4x100 (53.50) and 4x400 (4:37) relay teams.

Pasco's Garion "Red" Pope surprised his own teammate, Keymo Pearson, beating the previously undefeated jumper in the long jump with a leap of 20-9. Pearson was second (19-7) but still won the high (6-4) and triple (41-11) jumps. Kirk Moats won the shot put (48-61/4) and was third in the discus (133-1).

Angela Medvid led Wesley Chapel to second place, winning the 100 hurdles (17.63) and the 300 hurdles (48.09) while finishing second in the long jump (15-0). Ashley Martin won the shot put (34-81/2) and was third in the discus (87-51/2).

Pasco's LaShawn Vaughns led all athletes, winning five events. She took first in the long jump (17-41/2), the triple jump (31-3), the 100 (13.10), the 200 (26.69) and was a surprise victor in the 400 (62.90), a new event for her, as well.
