TAMPA -- Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies arrested a 32-year-old Tampa man early Saturday morning and charged him with the strangulation of his girlfriend in their apartment.
Leroy Jones of 1801 E 132nd Ave., Apt. 146 killed Deborah Clark, 33, during an argument on Friday afternoon, said sheriff's spokesman Rod Reder.
Jones had called relatives about 1 a.m. Saturday, Reder said. When they came to the apartment, they saw Clark dead in the bathroom and called police an hour later, Reder said.
Jones said Clark had slapped him before he attacked her, authorities said. He is charged with first-degree murder.
Jones and Clark have had troubles before.
On Tuesday, deputies made a domestic disturbance call to the couple's apartment and charged Clark with battery. She was released the following day.
Jones had been arrested in Hillsborough County nine times before Saturday, including four times involving domestic battery. He was on probation for grand theft when he was arrested Saturday.
He was held in the Orient Road Jail without bail.
