Intense emotional blackmail
For a singer-songwriter with roots in blues, twang and Tex-Mex, Alejandro Escovedo certainly poured on the grandeur in last year's A Man Under the Influence. Escovedo, named artist of the decade by influential alt-country magazine No Depression, worked big harmonies and bigger power chords into a set of tunes that again revealed the impressive artistry at the core of his tortured artist persona.
Vanity Fair described his music this way: "You'll want to fall in love and/or slit your wrists to the intense emotional blackmail served up."
Escovedo plays at 8 p.m. Saturday at Skipper's Smokehouse, 910 Skipper Road, Tampa. $12 advance, $15 at the door. (813) 238-8001 or (813) 977-6474.
