You're the greatest city, you're the greatest city ...Compiled from Times wires© St. Petersburg Times published April 1, 2002 A men's magazine says Miami is the Greatest City on Earth -- and so are 12 other North American cities. Maxim published 13 versions of its April issue, each touting a different city as the greatest and distributed regionally. "I felt a little guilty," senior editor James Heidenry said. "We just couldn't bring ourselves to tell the Southies in Boston that they weren't No. 1, or the people in New York that they weren't No. 1. So like a guy juggling different girlfriends, we told them all they were No. 1." The other top picks: Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Francisco, Toronto and Washington. It all began honestly enough, Heidenry said. "This is our fifth anniversary issue, so we thought it would be cool to name a city of the year," he said. The editors of the 2.5-million circulation magazine slashed the list of contenders to 13 but couldn't decide which they liked best, so they published 13 issues. To make matters worse, in each issue the 12 runners-up each receive a paragraph of insults. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
