Fire erupts at TECO power plantBy Times staff writer© St. Petersburg Times published April 3, 2002 TAMPA -- Hillsborough County Fire Rescue crews responded to a fire at the Tampa Electric Co.'s Gannon Power Station in Port Sutton early Wednesday. Officials originally thought the station's coal room was on fire, and they called more than a dozen engines to the scene. The fire started about midnight. By 12:45 a.m., at least 60 firefighters were at the station, at 3602 Port Sutton Road, and more were arriving. Officials said a conveyor belt that transports coal at the facility was on fire and in danger of collapsing.
