GYMNASTICS

County team lands sixth in state meet

A boys squad representing Citrus Gymnastics placed sixth in the large team division at the AAU State Championships at Polk Community College in Winter Haven.

Shea Dotson, 7, finished second on the rings and vault, sixth on the pommel horse, seventh on the parallel bars and high bar, eighth on the floor and seventh in the all-around.

Ryan Tugliesa, 11, was third on the parallel bars, fourth on the vault, rings, horse and floor, fifth on the high bar and fourth all-around.

Josh Younce, 13, was third on the horse and parallel bars, fourth on the high bar, vault and floor and third in the all-around.

Michael Younce, 9, took 10th in the all-around after placing sixth on the floor, ninth on the high bar, 10th on the horse, rings and vault and 11th on the parallel bars.

The squad is coached by Mason Cummings.

TRACK

Track and Field Day at Crystal River is set

The 17th annual Track and Field Day for athletes from the Key Training Center and the CREST School is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at Crystal River High School.

Track events include the 25-yard assisted walk, 25-yard wheelchair race, 25-yard three-wheel bicycle race, 25-yard walk, 25-yard run, "yard walk," 50-yard dash, 100-yard dash and 220-yard run. Field events include golf putting, softball throw, Frisbee throw and soccer kick.

Every athlete receives a medal.

The opening ceremonies will be led by the American Legion Color Guard, Crystal River High Navy Junior ROTC Color Guard, Crystal River High marching band and the athletes.

This is the fourth year Crystal River has played host to the games.

HORSESHOES

Beverly Hills clinic

The Beverly Hills Horseshoe Club will have a clinic Friday featuring world famous horseshoe pitcher and Professional Bowlers Association member Walter Ray Williams Jr.

The clinic is scheduled for 4-6 p.m. at Park Place West, 9070 SW 18th Ave., in Ocala. The public is invited to attend all events, which begin at 1 p.m.

GOLF

How Hnatiuk is faring

Weeki Wachee's Glen Hnatiuk, who plays out of World Woods Golf Club, ranks 139th on the PGA Tour's 2002 money list with $83,833 in earnings.

Hnatiuk's best finish is a tie for 23rd in the Nissan Open. He has the tour's lowest final-round scoring average (67.75) and is 269th on the career money list -- three spots ahead of Don January and 17 ahead of Chi Chi Rodriguez.

Hnatiuk has no career wins. January, 72, won 10 events, including the 1967 PGA Championship, and is a 22-time winner on the Senior PGA Tour. Rodriguez, 66, won eight PGA Tour events and has 22 senior victories.

The second annual Citrus County Match Play Championship is scheduled for April 26-28 at Inverness Golf and Country Club. Flights will be determined by handicap.

The Alfred E. Ronaldson Spring Golf Classic is April 20 at El Diablo and the Skyview course at Citrus Hills.

The cost for the best-ball team event is $70. Proceeds support the Fire Department of New York. For information, call 344-8386.

Citrus Hearing Impaired Program Services will have its sixth annual fund-raising tournament, a four-person scramble, May 11 at Plantation Inn in Crystal River.

The cost is $50. For information, call 795-5000.

The seventh annual Citrus County Seminoles Club Tournament is scheduled for April 20 at Citrus Hills.

The cost is $50 per player. Proceeds go to a scholarship fund that helps send local students to Florida State University. For information, call 726-9325 or 726-3966.
