A FLASH OF LIGHT AND ALL THAT JAZZ: The Inverness Middle School Fine Arts Department will present "A Flash of Light and All That Jazz" at 7 p.m. April 11 in the school's cafetorium, which will be transformed into a gallery/coffeehouse with visual art displays. Student performances will include a wide array of talent, including performances by the IMS Jazz Band and the IMS show choir, Flame. Special guest appearances will include nationally renowned jazz musician Fred Johnson from the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center and former IMS Jazz Band members, who will join the 2001-2002 IMS Jazz Band in an alumni reunion.

Refreshments of cappuccino, soda, and cookies will be available and three-dimensional art will be for sale. Proceeds will benefit the Fine Arts Department. A book fair there will benefit the school's media center. Admission is free, donations will be accepted. For information, Barbara Dover or Joy Livingston at 726-1471.

LITTLE RED SCHOOLHOUSE: Citrus County Schools invites the community to attend the Little Red Schoolhouse Academy from 9:30 a.m. to noon or 6:30 to 9 p.m. April 8, 15, 22 and 29 to learn about school-related topics, including curriculum, budget, safety and special programs. FREE COUNSELING: The Educational Opportunity Center at Central Florida Community College's Citrus County Campus offers free counseling and advisement services to help qualifying students build a better future, with individual guidance from the admissions process through graduation. The center provides assistance in completing forms and exploring career interests and opportunities, and sponsors tutoring and mentoring workshops. To learn more, or to attend one of the free information sessions at CFCC Citrus Campus, Lecanto, at 6:30 p.m. today and 10 a.m. Friday. There's no obligation, just the chance to learn more about the CFCC Educational Opportunity Center. Financial aid workshops will be offered a week after each information session. PREKINDERGARTEN, HEAD START APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE: Applications for prekindergarten, Head Start and subsidized child care are now available at any county elementary school and the Childhood Development Services Office at 5641 U.S. 41 in Crystal River.

CONGRESSIONAL ARTS COMPETITION: U.S. Rep. Karen Thurman invites public, private and homeschool high school students to enter An Artistic Discovery, the 21st annual Congressional Arts Competition. The winning artist in the national art competition is invited to Washington, D.C., for a reception honoring the contest winners. District winners are displayed on the walls of the Cannon Tunnel, which leads to the Capitol. Each district winner also receives an opportunity to attend the Savannah College of Art and Design and a $10,000 scholarship upon admission acceptance. Submit work to any of Thurman's offices in Inverness, Gainesville or New Port Richey with name, address, telephone number, school and name of sponsoring art teacher. Deadline is May 1. NAIL SPECIALTY TECHNICIAN CLASS: Withlacoochee Technical Institute is offering a summer nail specialty technician class from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday from June 3 to Aug. 1. Attendance is mandatory. The cost is $600 and includes tuition, books, kit and materials. Financial assistance is available. For information, call 726-2430.

ORIENTATION FOR 2002-2003 FRESHMAN: Citrus High School welcomes parents of 2002-03 freshmen to an orientation in two sessions Tuesday in the cafeteria. Students whose last names begin with A through K will meet 6 to 7 p.m. Students whose last names begin with L through Z will meet 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. Administration and guidance personnel will host parents for an information session about high school life, graduation requirements and the registration process. This is a night for parents. Counselors will meet with students in separate sessions Wednesday at Inverness Middle School. Other schools will meet on different dates. STUDENT ART EXHIBIT: The Central Florida Community College Student Art Exhibit will run through April 21 in the exhibition corridor outside the library in Building L-2 at the Citrus County campus in Lecanto. Entry into the exhibit is open to students from the college's Citrus County and Ocala campuses. First-, second- and third-place prizes will be awarded, as well as purchase awards for both two- and three-dimensional works. Exhibit judge Connie Shannon will determine the winners Saturday.
