BASEBALL

ASC honors Brown

Former Hernando High School two-sport star Dee Brown, an outfielder for Central Florida, was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday.

The award was in part earned by his history-making first collegiate home run. When Brown lined a 2-1 pitch out to left against Samford on March 29, he became the first Golden Knight to homer and score a touchdown in the same school year.

Brown plays fullback for the football team.

The rest of Brown's week was pretty good, too. He went 10-for-17 (.588) in 4 games and had 2 doubles and the homer, 3 runs scored and 7 RBIs (6 in consecutive 3-RBI games vs. Samford).

UCF went 3-1 last week to improve to 19-14. Brown leads the Knights with 22 RBIs, is second in hits (36) and fifth in batting (.356).

Former Hernando standout Chris Cole hit a grand slam Tuesday as Stetson walloped Bethune-Cookman 11-1 in a weather-shortened game in DeLand. The freshman is batting .346 for the 24-5 Hatters.

QUOTABLE

"I am not ready to throw (Mike) Hampton out with the bathwater, because Hampton's 14.73 earned-run average would just clog the drain."

-- Rocky Mountain News columnist Bernie Lincicome on the play of the ex-Crystal River standout, the losing pitcher in the Colorado Rockies' 10-2 opening-day defeat to St. Louis. Hampton allowed 9 hits and 6 earned runs in 32/3 innings.
