By Times staff reports New jail section reduces occupancy to capacityLAND O'LAKES -- Pasco County sheriff's officials on Wednesday officially opened a new section of the county jail, providing at least short-term relief from overcrowding. "As of this week we'll be right at the max instead of shooting way over it," said Maj. Michael Page, who oversees the sheriff's corrections unit. At times the jail in Land O'Lakes has been 200 over its capacity, which is measured by the number of permanent beds, Page said. The new wing -- named "Pod B" -- holds 192 inmates, Page said, and increases the jail's capacity to 576. The shell of Pod B was built in 1991 with the rest of the jail. It remained an empty cavern for many years until construction crews installed cells and rooms. The opening, which at one time was set for Jan. 1, 2001, has been delayed several times. The largest delay came after the discovery that the original plumbing was destroyed by rust, Page said. For about six weeks some inmates have been living in Pod B while jail officials refurbish other cells in the jail. Woman remains in fair condition after shootingThe woman who investigators say was shot Tuesday night by her son-in-law remained in fair condition on Wednesday at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg. Sharon Renna, 54, of Hudson was picking up clothes for her grandchildren about 4:40 p.m. Tuesday at her daughter and son-in-law's house when he shot her in the back, Pasco County sheriff's deputies said. Her son-in-law, 33-year-old Edward Albro, then killed himself inside the Shadow Ridge home at 12723 Buckhorn Drive, deputies said.
