Daily fishing report

Yes, it's king mackerel season. And it's the start of tarpon season.

Schools of threadfins and sardines are showing up, and that means silver kings aren't far behind.

Look for tarpon to show off Anna Maria Island first. They'll be rolling not far from the beach. If they're greyhounding they'll be hard to catch. Look for pods milling around, and try to get in front of the school and let it come to you.

Soon after they appear off Anna Maria they'll start to inundate the lower end of Tampa Bay. The flat west of Passage Key is a great place to find them. The clear water is shallow and the big fish are easy to see against the white, sandy bottom. Place your bait or lure in front of the pod and let it come to you. They're spooky in the skinny water.

They probably will show up next around the Sunshine Skyway. That normally presents a situation for anchoring and pitching greenbacks and letting the bait drift naturally around the pilings and bumpers.

After that the schools of bait will move up the bay, and so will the poons. Don't be far behind.
