The Central Florida men's team and Florida State women's squad are in the Sweet 16 of the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships April 17-20 in Buffalo, N.Y.

The top 64 men's and 64 women's teams competed for the top four spots in each of four regions to advance to the IBC.

Central Florida, in its second year of competition, finished second to Purdue in the Central Region in Louisville, Ky. Morehead State and Michigan State were the other qualifiers. Florida's men were ninth.

FSU's women finished third to Nebraska in the Midwest Region in Oklahoma City. Wichita State and McKendree College also advanced. The FSU men, coached by Bob Soety and Marvin Overby, finished eighth.

The East Region qualifiers were Saginaw Valley State, St. John's, St. Peter's and Penn State in the men's division and Pikeville, Shippensburg, Sacred Heart and St. Peter's in the women's competition.

West Region qualifiers were Fresno State, San Jose State, Arizona State and Washington State in the men's and Fresno State, Cal-State Fullerton and Central Missouri State for the women.

TO THE VICTORS: Mike Donahue led Central Florida's men to their first collegiate title recently at the Sunshine Classic in Sanford, beating a dozen teams for the title. Florida was second, followed by Florida State's A and B teams. The UCF women finished fourth behind the winning Seminoles.

Donahue toppled 1,793 pins in eight games, averaging 224 to lead all scorers. Florida's Adam Gregg was second at 215 and Central Florida's Casey Cannizzaro was fourth at 208.

Lisa Shaw's 1,659 pinfall and 207 average led the Seminoles past North Carolina A&T, Southern and Central Florida. Shaw's teammates, Marla McMakin and Allison Cale, averaged 203 and 196, respectively, to finish second and third in the individual standings and Central Florida's Linda Martinez was fourth.

Last month, Central Florida traveled west for the Brunswick Las Vegas Open and finished 15th in the 17-team women's field and the men were sixth in the 31-team field. Wichita State won the men's title, edging Arizona State. Nebraska captured the women's title, handily beating Wichita State. Donahue averaged 235, but Western Illinois's Nate Nimrick averaged 241. Arizona State's Brandi Wolfe led the women with a 235 average.

IN THE RANKINGS: Indiana State heads the latest women's collegiate poll, followed by Morehead State and Arizona State, and FSU is ranked 10th. Wichita State tops the men's poll, followed by Western Illinois and Saginaw Valley State, with FSU ranked 19th.

SENIORS, PWBA UPDATES: The nine-event PBA Senior Tour opens April 27 at Chillicothe, Ohio.

The Professional Women's Bowling Association opens its 2002-03 campaign at the WIBC Queens tournament May 5 at South Milwaukee, Wis. The tour includes 21 stops, none in Florida, and ends with the U.S. Women's Open in November.

The May 28-June 2 event is unique in PWBA history: women pros competing against top collegiate players, with the final live June 2 on ESPN.

Carolyn Dorin-Ballard topped all PWBA money winners last season with more than $139,000 earned. Kim Terrell was second at $98,500 and Wendy Macpherson was third at $92,940.

Parker Bohn III was the top PBA winner with more than $245,000. Doug Kent was second at $185,000 and Pete Weber was third at $170,000. Ocala's Walter Ray Williams was fourth, Clermont's Jason Couch sixth and Norm Duke 21st and Tarpon Springs' Steve Hoskins 23rd.
