Christian rockers in Coachman Park
Two acts in the vanguard of modern Christian music, Grammy-winning alt rockers Jars of Clay and folk rocker Jennifer Knapp, perform at Clearwater's Coachman Park on Friday. Christian music in 2002 often is harder-edged than that of pop-tinged pioneers such as Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith, tackling issues such as pain, loss and confusion as well as faith, hope and love. Another hallmark: avoiding church talk in favor of everyday language. The genre's popularity has been blossoming for several years now, more so in the wake of Sept. 11. Promising newcomer Shaun Groves opens the 6 p.m. concert. General admission is $7. Call (813) 287-8844 for information.
Speaking of Pat Metheny . . .
Pat Metheny may have raised a ruckus a while back by questioning the sad efforts of wealthy saxophone owner Kenny G., but the guitarist can back it up. Metheny, a perennial poll winner, remains one of the most inspired and creative musicians on the planet, even in a setting as heavily produced as his new Speaking of Now album. The six-stringer, in recent years leading a jazz-rootsy trio, has returned to the lush, fusion-oriented setting of the Pat Metheny Group. The ensemble has been retooled, with longtime keyboardist Lyle Mays and bassist Steve Rodby joined by several international newcomers: drummer Antonio Sanchez, trumpeter-vocalist Cuong Vu and Richard Bona, a phenomenal electric bassist moonlighting as a percussionist-vocalist for Metheny. Count on awe-inspiring improvisations and wondrous acoustic-electric textures.
Pat Metheny performs tonight at 8 at Ruth Eckerd Hall, 1111 McMullen-Booth Road, Clearwater. Tickets are $32.50-$70. Call (727) 791-7400.
