Quixote on stage, again

Man of La Mancha, the tale of knight-errant Don Quixote as told by Miguel Cervantes to save himself from his fellow dungeon-dwellers, has enchanted audiences since its 1965 Broadway opening. The signature song, The Impossible Dream, has become an anthem. The Show Palace Dinner Theatre in Hudson launches its version of Man of La Mancha on Friday and continues the show through May 12. South Florida actor Jerry Gulledge (The Unsinkable Molly Brown, Oliver!, Big River) makes his debut at the Show Palace in the role of Cervantes/Quixote, which he says he's done "from Philadelphia to Miami." Tampa Bay area singer-dancer Angela Bond (Fiorello!, Aretta Webb in Webb's City: The Musical) plays Aldonza/Dulcinea, Quixote's true love. The Show Palace is at 16128 U.S. 19, Hudson. Dinner and show, $37.50; show only, $24.95. Ages 12 and younger, $19.95 and $14.95. Call (727) 863-7949 in west Pasco; toll free 1-888-655-7469 elsewhere.

High jinks on the high seas

Remember those happy-go-lucky 1930s musicals? Where nothing really bad ever happened and all ended happily ever after? That's Dames at Sea, the 1968 Broadway spoof of 1930s musicals that won a Drama Desk Award for then-newcomer Bernadette Peters. The Angel Cabaret Theatre in New Port Richey opens its version of the peppy show on Friday for a seven-week run. It stars Disney/MGM Studios singer-dancer Kristin Graf as Ruby, the little girl from Centerville, Utah, who gets her big break when the star of the show gets seasick, and William Garon as Dick, the sailor-songwriter who falls for her. There's lots of singing, dancing and high jinks by the six-member cast, which also has Busch Gardens veteran Elizabeth Brandel, dinner theater performer David Craven and Angel regulars Chelle St. Pierre and James Grenelle in the comic roles. Evenings and matinees Fridays-Sundays. Dinner and show, $32.50; show only, $19.95. Ages 12 and younger, $19.95 and $14.95. The theater is at 5201 U.S. 19 in the Southgate Shopping Center. Call (727) 847-0019.
