Everyone wants to be city's top cop

Filling the shoes of retiring Zephyrhills police Chief Robert Howell may be a tough job, but 74 men from across the country have applied for it.

ZEPHYRHILLS -- It's been a busy few months for mail at Zephyrhills City Hall.

The packages arrived in large envelopes and small ones. Some came in plastic binders. Some were brown, others white, others gray. But all of them are inquiries about the same job: Zephyrhills police chief.

By the time the last applications arrived Monday, 74 men had applied for the position.

The one who wins the post will have hefty shoes to fill.

Retiring Chief Robert Howell started at the department at age 24 and has worked there for 40 years. In that time, he has built a reputation as a calm leader in the community, both on and off the job.

"I feel safe and secure and comfortable that we have a person of high integrity," City Council member Elizabeth Geiger said at a recent meeting. "I like him. I don't want him to retire."

Nevertheless, Howell said he will step down in October. City officials hope to have the new chief in place by June so that he can work alongside Howell for several months and grow into the job.

Getting the job will be no easy task. Tougher still will be deciding whom to hire.

A five-member, high-profile search committee assembled by City Manager Steve Spina will whittle the pool of applicants to 10. They will interview those and forward a list of five finalists to Spina.

Spina then will nominate one applicant to be approved by the City Council.

Since the city first advertised the opening, applications have poured in from across the country, from Clearwater to Kansas to California.

Locals have shown interest as well, with Zephyrhills Sgt. Randy Belasic and former Pasco County Sheriff Jim Gillum applying for the job.

"We were surprised but real pleased with the numbers of resumes," Spina said. "I think it shows a good reflection on the Police Department. It shows that we have a good reputation."

The Zephyrhills Police Department has a $2.5-million budget and currently employs 29 officers. The chief's job will pay $45,283 to $65,660, depending on experience.
