Daily fishing report: Tournament insider

Perhaps Sky Brown wondered what he and Dennis Stevens were doing 5 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday morning with the wind howling and the sea breaking over the bow of Full Contact.

But by 11:15, his focus was on a king mackerel, one that took another 25 minutes to reel in.

Stevens steered the boat into the waves, giving chase to the fish. They had entered Billy's Stonecrab Spring Kingfish Tournament, and the 38.4-pound king earned them first place and $2,000. Adam Carr on Slade 'em worked the hard bottom north of Whistler Buoy to find a 34.4-pound king for second place and $900. Eric Smith on Comfortably Numb brought back a 31.2-pound king for third and $750. Donna Smith on Hook Me Up brought in a 28-pound king to win the women's division.

The tournament paid to 10th place, and there were 20 fish weighed.
