Lives intersect in 'Changing Lanes'

Next time you feel a fit of road rage, consider what happens to the fender-bending antagonists of Changing Lanes. Ben Affleck and Samuel L. Jackson play commuters involved in an auto collision at the wrong time in their lives. Gavin Banek (Affleck) is a lawyer heading to an important trial, and Doyle Gibson (Jackson) is a businessman whose child custody hearing can't be missed. However, Doyle does miss that hearing, a problem compounded by the fact that Gavin left the scene of the accident. But the lawyer left an important file behind, leading to an escalating game of backstabbing as Gavin tries to recover his papers and Doyle aims for vengeful satisfaction. Changing Lanes was directed by Roger Michell (Notting Hill), and its preview trailers are among the most promising seen this year. See Friday's page 2B for a review, since the film was screened too late for Weekend.
