Ancient Origins: American Southwestern Pottery, A.D. 600-1600 at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, ends Sunday. Ancient clay looks surprisingly contemporary in this exhibit of vessels crafted by Native American artists. Admire them on their own terms or pick up a catalog that explains the nuances.
David E. Davis: Seven Outdoor Sculptures, 1977-2001; Albert Paley: Sculpture, Drawings, Graphics and Decorative Arts; and William King, The Party at Gulf Coast Museum of Art in Largo ends Sunday. All three put on a good show, but metal artist Paley is the front-runner, able to bend the rigid medium to his lyrical will.
River Myths at the Tampa Museum of Art ends Wednesday. Therman Stantom fills the exhibition space with an installation that uses imagery from his childhood along the Hillsborough River. His signature glass house is as big as a walk-in closet, and a giant mirrored sea creature slithers nearby. River Myths is not a total success as a cohesive work but has moments of wit and wonder.
Gimme Shelter at Florida Craftsmen Gallery in St. Petersburg ends April 20. Give 50 artists the same simple house form and watch the creativity build. The small but elaborately finished works are on display and for sale by silent auction. Some are true gems. The bidding closes April 20.
