Tarpon Springs offensive lineman Phil Skandaliaris has signed to play football at Jacksonville, and teammate RoShawn Marshall will attend Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College next season, Spongers coach Don Davis said.

Marshall, a talented 5-foot-11, 180-pound cornerback and utility player, had signed with South Florida but has not qualified academically. He could play at Fort Scott for one or two seasons until he does qualify and then return to USF or sign elsewhere.

"If he doesn't (qualify academically), that's where he'll be," USF coach Jim Leavitt said.

Marshall was a first-team all-county pick, as was Skandaliaris, a 5-10, 205-pound center. Jacksonville will be entering its fourth season in Division I-AA.

Two other Spongers offensive lineman, Kegan Roorda and Kelly McCarty (an all-county wrestler as well), signed with Doane College, an NAIA school in Crete, Neb.

McCarty is 6-3, 270 pounds. The Spongers offensive line blocked for Marshall and 1,000-yard rusher Jeremy Saunders.

SOFTBALL: Palm Harbor University seniors Katie Dobson and Janine Palumbo have been longtime battery mates and their relationship won't end after this season.

The pair has signed with Jacksonville University, which will field its first softball team next year.

"I'm excited," Palumbo said. "I can be the first All-American catcher, all-academic winner, all that."

Palumbo, projected as the starting catcher, is a two-time Times All-County first-team selection and batted .406 last year. Dobson, a right-handed pitcher, led the county in ERA as a sophomore and went 17-2 last year.

"We talked about (playing together) today, and we're thinking about rooming together," Palumbo said.

Former Countryside shortstop Dianna Korcak also signed with the Dolphins after playing two years at Central Florida Community College.
