Putt Putt

PUTT FOR DOUGH: Padraig Harrington had his problems at the par-5 13th. He was thinking eagle when his 5-wood approach shot sailed toward the green, but he ended up with bogey. The shot flew over the green, from where Harrington attempted to putt through the fringe. "I took four to get down from there," he said. "I should have chipped it. I actually hit four good putts and I hit a good putt back, a 3-footer. ... I was enjoying that."

SURPRISE: Vijay Singh's eagle at the 15th vaulted him into the lead. After a 7-iron to the green he had a 25-foot putt. "I really was just trying to get close to the hole," he said. "I wasn't comfortable with the read or the pace of it, and I just hit it and it went in. It was a good sight to see it go in." Singh also made birdie on the 17th and 18th.

EASY, FREDDY: Despite early morning rain that at times fell quite hard, play was never halted until it rained again in the afternoon. That had Fred Couples scratching his head. "I got upset because the course was under water," he said. "I saw them (using a squeegee) on the fifth green from 5 feet out. I was screaming my head off. ... Well, not really screaming, but talking loudly to the officials. I apologized. ... I don't think they dropped the ball on it, but I had never seen that here before."
