TAMPA -- As was the case at many prep sporting events across the county Friday, rain threw a wrench into the boys Western Conference tennis finals at Hunter's Green.
Play was halted after about an hour when rain began pelting the courts. Another hour later, Durant and Wharton were declared co-champions by virtue of the six points they earned in Thursday's first round.
"I think it was a great decision under the circumstances," Wharton coach Marcie Scholl said. "Both teams were playing great tennis and, after the rains came, I think both teams deserved to share the title."
Rain or not, King sewed up the girls title in Thursday's first round at Whiteway Courts. The Lions came into Friday's matches with seven points, enough to seal the victory.
