Jeanne Reeves caught a 38.14-pound king mackerel to win the eighth annual Suncoast Kingfish Classic Sunday at Perico Harbor Marina in Bradenton.

Reeves, in her third pro tournament, was with Capt. Randy Rochelle and Leiza Fitzgerald. At about 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Rochelle slowed Gotta Go just offshore of Bean Point to look over the area when they saw flying fish being chased by some large king mackerel. Setting out their lines baited with blue runners, it was just moments before all the rods went off. Fifteen minutes later Rochelle layed the gaff in the team's winning fish. First place was worth $17,000 in cash and prizes. Reeves also won prizes in the women's division.

Morgan Kien, 14, on Team Creative brought in a 31.26-pound king in the youth division. Fishing 9 miles off the beach, Kien's fish first took the bait, minus the hooks, from the downrigger. When the fish made another pass at the flat line, the hooks stuck. Twenty-five minutes later, Ron Kien put the gaff in his son's fish.

In the 23-and-under division, Larry Galan on Miss Treated won with a 37.62-pounder caught west of the Southwest Pass in 42 feet.

There was some concern when the outcome was delayed because the scale quit functioning. The scale was replaced and the weigh-in continued.
