By DAVE GUSSOW After Shot
For those just getting started in digital photography and looking for editing software, let me strongly suggest After Shot as an excellent starting point. Jasc succeeds where so many other tech products come up short: It is incredibly easy to use. After Shot makes transferring photos from the camera to the PC a snap. You plug in the camera, and the software immediately recognizes it and walks you through the process, including asking at the end whether you want to erase the card in the camera. The program has one-click functions for color correction and cropping, as well as features for special effects. Users can easily sort photos and set up albums with thumbnail views. And users e-mail a photo directly from the program. After Shot trades the bells and whistles of more sophisticated programs -- such as Adobe Photoshop Elements or Jasc's Paint Shop Pro -- for ease of use. But it has more than enough features and power for a lot of users. Another good thing: You can download and try the program free for 30 days (www.jasc.com).
