CLEARWATER -- Larry Dimmitt Jr., local philanthropist and car dealer, will be honored Saturday at an annual awards lunch sponsored by the Clearwater/Tampa Bay chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters at Safety Harbor Resort and Spa.

Dimmitt, 87, who has lived in Clearwater since 1924, has paid for buildings and contributed to many organizations in the Tampa Bay area. He built the gymnasiums at St. Paul School and Berkeley Preparatory School, paid for the carillon bell tower at Episcopal Church of the Ascension and provides four scholarships a year for Eckerd College students.

Organizations that have benefited from his donations include Morton Plant Hospital, Ruth Eckerd Hall, the Florida Orchestra, Florida West Ballet, Girls Clubs and Children's Home Society.

Tickets to the lunch are $25, and reservations can be made by calling 939-4740 or 796-4708.

The National Society of Arts and Letters is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating opportunities for young artists.
