Warhawks advance

SEMINOLE -- Seminole needed an extra day and a few more tense moments before it finally defeated Lakewood on Wednesday in a playoff to advance to Friday's Class 3A regional match against Countryside. The Warhawks topped Lakewood 5-2 at the McMullen Tennis Center.

"We really took it to them today," Seminole coach Richard Lally said. "Our girls were a little shaken after Tuesday, but they played well today. Hopefully, the same will be true in regionals."

Lakewood forced the playoff Tuesday when it stormed back in doubles to tie Seminole with 13 points. That forced Wednesday's playoff, where matches were played as eight-point pro sets instead of three-set matches.

Seminole held a 3-1 advantage after four singles matches. Desiree Collins defeated Katie Zaleski at No. 2 singles, Courtney Koch defeated Corrie Sundstrom at No. 3 and Katie Kiernan won at No. 4 to give Seminole its three points. Lakewood's Summer Potts defeated Maddy Erbe at No. 5 singles.

That left the No. 1 singles, and if Seminole's Amanda Yogus could defeat Lakewood's Kaela Kennedy, the match would be over. But Kennedy battled back from two games down and eventually won the two-hour match 9-8 in a tiebreaker.

In doubles, Seminole clinched when Yogus and Collins defeated Kennedy and Zaleski 8-1 at No. 1 doubles. Seminole's Koch and Erbe won 8-5 over Lakewood's Marqueta Maynard and Potts in No. 2 doubles.

The winner of Friday's regional advances to the state tournament Monday in Altamonte Springs.
