1. Metropolis -- A stunning example of Japanese anime, pitting man vs. machine and Hollywood's live-action thrills against the boundless imagination of animation artists. Only at Tampa Theatre.

2. Changing Lanes -- Smartly produced thriller starring Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Affleck as motorists whose minor accident produces major consequences.

3. The Rookie -- Late-blooming pitcher Jim Morris (Dennis Quaid) beats the odds to become a middle-aged major-league rookie for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

4. Monster's Ball -- An excellent ensemble cast -- especially Oscar winner Halle Berry and Billy Bob Thornton -- breathes life into a suffocating tragedy of racism, capital punishment and family skeletons.

5. Y Tu Mama Tambien -- Oversexed teenagers escort a sultry housewife to a beach paradise. Graphic sexuality will offend some viewers. Subtitled and not rated, but it should be NC-17.
