Boston Marathon runner dies days after collapse

A woman who ran the Boston Marathon to raise money for cancer patients died late Wednesday, two days after collapsing.

Cynthia Lucero, 28, was raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. She is the second fatality in the marathon's 106-year history.

According to a friend, Carole Slipowitz, Lucero stopped near the finish line, saying she felt dehydrated. She grew wobbly kneed and fainted. By the time she was transported to a hospital, Lucero was nearly in a coma. The cause of death is unknown.

In 1996, Humphrey Siesage had a heart attack at the finish line.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: USF assistant Clyde Vaughan will interview for a similar position at Connecticut. Vaughan, 40, from New Rochelle, N.Y., has been at USF since 1999, and he spent time on Seth Greenberg's staff at Long Beach State from 1992-96. "He's like a son to me," Greenberg said. "But if it's a better opportunity for him and his family. ... " Former Connecticut assistant Dave Leitao was hired as coach at DePaul on Tuesday. ... Former FSU star Rodney Tucker pleaded no contest to misdemeanor simple battery. Tucker, a 6-foot-8, 230-pound forward, was suspended for what would have been his sophomore season after his Sept.29, 2000, arrest on charges he sexually assaulted a physically helpless woman. Tucker, 21, was sentenced to six months of probation, a $314 fine and three days in the county work program. ... Richmond's John Beilein was hired as coach at West Virginia. He was 100-53 in five seasons at Richmond and received a five-year contract worth $550,000 a year.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: The Florida Citrus Commission ended its 19-year sponsorship of the Citrus Bowl. ... Virginia Tech quarterback Grant Noel tore the ACL in his left knee during spring practice. If the injury heals on its own, Noel could be ready to practice in August. If he needs surgery, Noel could be out until October.

COLLEGES: Host Saint Leo swept a softball doubleheader from Eckerd 3-1 and 6-1. ... FSU beat Maryland 4-3 in the first round of the ACC women's tennis tournament in Raleigh, N.C. It faces North Carolina today. ... Host Florida Southern beat Tampa 5-1 in the Sunshine State Conference women's tennis tournament. ... Utah's Theresa Kulikowski took the all-around lead at the NCAA gymnastics meet in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Utah, Georgia and Nebraska reached the team final. ... Bill McGillis, an associate athletic director at New Mexico, was named AD at Evansville.

TENNIS: Monica Seles lost to Stephanie Foretz 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, S.C. Play was suspended after the match when a truck carrying gas cylinders caught fire after hitting a police car on a nearby bridge. Glass fell onto a storage tent, but there were no injuries. ... Andy Roddick lost to Tommy Haas 6-3, 6-2 in the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters in Monaco. ... Top-seeded Martina Sucha beat Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-1, 6-2 in the second round of the Budapest Grand Prix in Hungary.

SOCCER: FIFA will discuss a proposal to have the World Cup champion play a world all-star team Sept.11 at Giants Stadium. ... A fan who bit a chunk out of a coach's ear was jailed for three years. Peter Tucker was convicted of assaulting Simon Kay after the Hove Park Colts defeated Tucker's side, the Fishergate Flyers, in an under-15 game in Southwick, England, in November 2000.

TRACK AND FIELD: The world governing body is taking its U.S. affiliate to arbitration to get the name of an American who competed in the Sydney Olympics after being cleared of a doping offense.

SAILING: News Corp. won the sixth leg of the Volvo Ocean Race, which ended in the Chesapeake Bay off Baltimore.
