By MELIA BOWIE, Times Staff Writer Benito Middle takes first at math competitionBenito Middle School took first place Wednesday at the Hillsborough County School District Middle School Math competition at the Florida State Fairgrounds. When grade scores were compared, Buchanan Middle School's sixth-grade came in first, and Benito's seventh-grade finished second. Among eighth-grades, Ben Hill Middle placed second and Benito was third. Individual winners included Eva Dou, Hill sixth-grade, third place; Charles Zhu, Benito seventh-grade, second; Walter Li, Benito seventh-grade, third. Benito students earn high marks for science projectsHUNTER'S GREEN -- A Benito Middle School student took second place at the state science fair in Lakeland this month. Sixth-grader Monica Mukherjee won for a project that asked: "Does the Redirection of Wind Through Nozzles of Varying Areas Affect the Rotation of a Wind Turbine?" Her study won in the junior division's engineering category. Benito seventh-grader Sitara Witanachchi took third place in the junior chemistry division for her project: "What Is the Effect of NaCl (sodium chloride) Concentration on the Electrical Potential Build On the Surface of a Simulated Heart Cell Membrane?" Benito eighth-grader Justus Roberts, making a repeat appearance in the state competition, earned sixth place in the junior division's medicine and health category by examining which household items are more effective in killing biological agents. It is the first time the New Tampa middle school sent three students to the fair.
