Eagles in 2nd again

East Lake trails a Naples school heading into the final day of matches for the second straight season.

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS -- After the first round at Sanlando Park, nobody could blame East Lake for feeling a bit of deja vu.

The Eagles sit in second place with eight points, two behind Naples. Last season, East Lake trailed Barron Collier of Naples and needed to make a move on the second day. It didn't happen, and the Eagles finished second.

For that not to happen again, East Lake must make its move early. Only No. 2 Adel Naser and No. 3 Dmitri Bubis remain in the singles finals for the Eagles. Naser will play Chris Floyd of Naples, and Bubis will meet Naples' Andrew Roth. Naples also has players in the No. 1 and No. 4 singles finals.

"We need a little help," East Lake coach Bill Gunther said. "(No. 1) Ryan (Buchanan) played a tough match in the second round. Adel and Dmitri are playing very well. We'll have to see what happens."

Buchanan, who advanced to the overall singles championship last season, played a three-hour, three-set semifinal against Shaun Taylor of Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas before losing 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5.

Geoff Gilchrist advanced to the semifinals at No. 4 but lost to Durant's John Henderson 7-5, 6-2. Jason Swenson lost at No. 5 in the first round, 6-3, 6-2 to Aquinas' Josh Molino.

Naser and Buchanan teamed up to win the No. 1 doubles quarterfinal 6-4, 6-4 over St. Thomas Aquinas' Taylor and Andrew Krinsky. Bubis and Swenson defeated Matthew Poliner and Gregory Heartt of Flagler Palm Coast, 6-2, 6-2.

Durant is in third place with six points. Aquinas is fourth with four.

In the individual tournament at Lake Brantley High School, Scott Forsman lost his opening-round singles match to Van Cavage of Fort Myers 6-1, 6-3. Forsman and Chris Bulone stumbled in doubles, 7-5, 6-1.
