Apartments ready for first tenants in July

ST. PETERSBURG -- Calais Park, the apartment project under construction at the former Pet Dairy site, Interstate 275 and 54th Avenue N, will have the first of its 262 units ready for occupancy in July.

The project consists of 32 buildings, all of which have been started. Some are complete enough that drywall is being installed, according to Bob Schmidt, chief executive officer of Boulder Venture, the builder.

Rents at Calais Park will range from $500 to $1,300 per month, Schmidt said. The complex will have efficiencies and one-, two- and three-bedroom units. Some of the apartments will have attached garages.

Boulder Venture will complete the $20-million project by February or March of next year, Schmidt said.

Card shop to close at sale's end

ST. PETERSBURG -- The Carde Shoppe in Bay Pointe Plaza plans to close as soon as a sale clears the store of its cards, T-shirts, gifts and collectibles.

Ruth Wybrow said she and her husband were giving up the shop because of poor health. She said they still are trying to sell it, but if they do not succeed, they will close it when the last of the merchandise is sold.

The Wybrows are from England and came to this country eight years ago, Mrs. Wybrow said. They opened the Carde Shoppe about six months later, moving it to 5045 34th St. S four years ago.

Downtown sub shop closes

ST. PETERSBURG -- Quizno's Classic Subs, One Progress Plaza, has closed, and management for the Bank of America Tower is pursuing a similar business to replace the establishment.

"Whether it's another Quizno's or something similar, we are actively marketing the property," said Roger Donaldson, property manager for Bank of America Tower.

The franchise, one of four in St. Petersburg, first opened in the fall of 1998. Management did not want to comment further on the closing.
