Bring on the bands
By BARBARA L. FREDRICKSEN, Times Staff Writer Eight diverse musical groups will give an eight-hour concert Saturday to raise money for the Concourse, the 214-acre property on State Road 52 that currently is home to Safety Town safety training center for kids. The Concourse's board hopes to raise enough money to start work on a bicycle race track that could be part of Tampa Bay BMX, and, eventually, an amphitheater, camping sites, trails and overlooks and bird-watching areas. The concert will be at the Bourbon Street Concert Club in New Port Richey. "We're hoping to have a bike path straight to the Suncoast Parkway some day soon," said Jim Wilcox, president of Concourse Council Inc. That would put bicyclers as well as drivers within easy reach of the Concourse's facilities. The music starts at 5 p.m. with a half-hour set by the children's group For Kids Only. The kids will be followed by Knight Sounds, a group of high school teachers who play classic rock, power country and cutting edge new wave. The Damon Fowler Group comes on from 7:15 to 8 p.m., with guest performer T.C. Carr. Fowler plays blues and rock; Carr plays harmonica and sings rock, soul and blues. Following Fowler and Carr is Soul Sacrifice from 8:15 to 9 p.m. and then a short set by country singer John Wayne Wilkinson. Elston Gunnn, which features Jesse and Noah Bellamy, the sons of David Bellamy (of the Bellamy Brothers), and bassist Bob Massicotte and drummer Ken Grube, will perform from 9:45 to 10:30 p.m. The group's sound is different from that of the Bellamy Brothers, according to the all the members. "We're a rock band that plays country music as opposed to what you hear on country radio these days," Noah Bellamy told the Times earlier this year. Elston Gunnn replaces Lazy Boy and the Rockers, which dropped out because of a hand injury sustained by guitarist Donny Kuryliw. In the 10:45-11:45 time slot is local favorite Wiley Fox Band and guests, who play country rock. From midnight to 1 a.m. will be Billy "Beet" and Friends, a quasi-jam session of classic rock musicians. The evening ends with a jam session of many of the performers from 1:15 to 2 a.m. Bourbon Street's kitchen and raw bar will have steamed clams, shrimp, oysters and the regular menu of hamburgers, grouper sandwiches, wings, fries and other food throughout the fund-raiser.
