CLEARWATER -- A helmetless motorcyclist remained in critical condition on Friday after sustaining massive head injuries in a head-on collision with a car Thursday night.

Larry Dale Pennington, 45, of Spring Hill, was riding a 1996 Harley-Davidson east on Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard about 9:20 p.m. Thursday when he collided with a Toyota Corolla driven by Kimberly Jane Schuck, 38, of Clearwater.

Schuck was headed west on Gulf-to-Bay and attempted to turn left to go south on U.S. 19.

Pennington was thrown from his motorcycle and suffered massive head injuries, said Clearwater police spokesman Wayne Shelor.

"He tumbled through the air," Shelor said.

The car, the motorcycle and Pennington ended up under the U.S. 19 overpass, Shelor said.

Pennington was treated at the scene by Clearwater firefighter/paramedics before being transported to Mease Countryside Hospital.

He was then taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where a hospital spokeswoman reported Friday that he remained in critical condition.

"The head wounds were severe," Shelor said. "Certainly a helmet would have played a part in his safety."

But many of the injuries appeared to be to Pennington's face, Shelor said, so "whether a helmet would have precluded him from serious injury has not been determined."

Schuck was not injured, Shelor said.

Police have not yet determined which vehicle had the right of way, Shelor said, and no one has received a citation.
