Clubhouse's flagpole vanishes without a trace

BAYONET POINT -- It's 30 to 35 feet tall and weighs 208 pounds.

And it has disappeared without a trace.

The Beacon Woods Homeowners Association clubhouse flagpole disappeared overnight Wednesday, Pasco County sheriff's deputies said. The mulch around it was left undisturbed. The red ruffle azaleas were untrampled.

"Whoever did it either was very strong, or someone came in here with equipment to get it out," said property manager Rosanne Frick. "My first thought was, 'You've got to be kidding me.' Who would want to do that? How would you do it?"

A Beacon Woods maintenance worker first noticed the pole was missing about 7 a.m. Thursday in front of the clubhouse, 8421 Clayton Blvd., Frick said. It disappeared sometime after 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The galvanized steel pole with an American flag was removed from a sleeve buried in the ground. It had spotlights shining on it.

"I just said, 'Wow. Who doesn't like us today?' " Frick said.
