Restaurant fair raises record amount

The annual Taste of New Tampa raised a record $27,000 that will go to local schools, organizers said.

The event, which took place on April 7 at the Shoppes of Amberly, featured food, music and the chance to laugh with neighbors.

The event brought in about $47,000 in gross revenues, and about 6,000 people attended. Last year, the event raised $13,000.

Speeders feel crackdown at traffic trouble spots

Sheriff's deputies dished out traffic citations with fines totaling $16,619 during a speeding crackdown Tuesday in Lutz and New Tampa.

Gordon Brown, the Hillsborough County community resource deputy in Lutz, said the pack-style enforcement was spurred by complaints. He said the 129 citations were split between Bruce B. Downs Boulevard and a pair of trouble spots in Lutz: U.S. 41 south of County Line Road and Lutz-Lake Fern Road at Crooked Lane.

A similar operation on April 12 produced 87 citations, mostly on U.S. 41, Brown said.

"We'll do it again here in the next month," he said.
