He was getting discouraged and just about ready to leave when a big king looked over the three threadfins he used for bait. But he didn't hit, Greg Sellers lamented.

So Ron Taylor exchanged a threadfin for a cigar minnow. I cast it out, and it was off to the races, Taylor said of the king that struck the new baitfish.

Taylor and Sellers were with Frank Robinson on Fish Tales about 25 miles offshore of Clearwater. The trio participated in the Old Salts King of the Beach king mackerel tournament Saturday at Leverock's in St. Pete Beach.

Their 37.1-pound kingfish won the tournament and $10,000.

Joel Zalud Jr. and his father took their boat, Seconds, about 12 miles offshore of Boca Grande to find a 35.84-pound king for second. Zalud said as soon as they put out bait, two blue runners were hit.

Jerry Gibson on Reef Raft took the pot luck 15th-place prize of a boat, motor and trailer package for his 25.34-pound king.

Mark Miklos Jr., 6, slowtrolled blue runners with his father 20 miles west of the Betty Rose. Miklos hooked a 19.62-pound king and won the youth division.

There were 257 boats entered with payout to 25th. -- To get in touch with Larry Blue, call (727) 397-3773 or send him an e-mail, CaptLBlue@aol.com. To find out how to get tournament results in the paper, call 727-893-8123.
