Daily fishing report

For the next two or three weeks any fish caught offshore should be targeted. The kingfish run is starting to wind down, evidenced by the size of the fish being caught. The schoolies that provide the most action because of their large numbers have moved north and have been replaced by fewer-in-number but larger fish. Large blue runners, mullet and mackerel are the bait of choice for those looking for an end-of-season smoker. Patience is necessary because bites are few and far in between. Barracuda have become active on the wrecks and artificial reefs, and can be caught using the same baits and slow-trolling methods that are employed for large kingfish. Spanish mackerel are in abundance on the beach near any pass and can provide nonstop action both on live greenbacks and artificial baits such as small spoons and jigs.

We spotted a sailfish striking a pod of bait Tuesday in 65 feet of water, but could not entice him to strike a slow-trolled blue runner. Deployment of a flat line while bottom fishing can result in the capture of almost any one of the pelagic species that are moving through our area. Kingfish tournament anglers fishing in the area of the Whistler were interrupted by "unwelcome" blackfin tuna and dolphin in the 8- to 10-pound class on several occasions.
