Here are some of the newest Mexican taquerias and panaderias we've found in the bay area. Tacos run $1 to $1.75; soups, platters and specials from $5 to $10.

-- Cinco de Mayo (1262 Highland Ave., Clearwater; (727) 446-1937): No tacos, but a full bakery makes the freshest rolls, traditional conchas to cheese pastries, and tamales.

n Don Pancho Villa (2551 Drew St., Clearwater; (727) 799-0253): Full-line taqueria with weekend specials, tienda and butcher shop takes its place in a modern U.S. 19 center; carnitas by the pound.

-- El Chicanito (1478 Gulf to Bay Blvd., Clearwater; (727) 446-2402): Restaurant and taqueria with good tacos, great frijoles and horchata with La Campesina, (727) 445-9772, making fresh tortillas and tamales next door.

-- El Maguey (4327 66th St. N, St. Petersburg; (727) 547-9366): Tienda and taqueria has tacos of pork, beef, lamb and tongue, plus gorditas and full menu; check specials for great birria. n El Ranchito de Pepe (1406 Cleveland St., Clearwater; (727) 562-0515): A big tienda with butcher shop and a bigger list of almost a dozen tacos every day.

-- El Rincon Mexicano (4907 N Armenia Ave., Tampa; (813) 877-1656): Full-service sit-down restaurant with tacos of barbacoa, carnitas and lengua.

-- Florence la Mexicana (902 22nd St. S, Tampa; (813) 248-8566). Well-established taqueria and cafeteria hard by the port. If they have goat, you gotta try it.

-- Guadalajara (4502 W Hillsborough, Tampa; (813) 879-4096) Despite the fountain and fancy tiles, the tacos al pastor, tripe and birria haven't been toned down.

-- Los Amigos (1632 Missouri Ave. N, Largo; (727) 582-9895): New taqueria and tienda with tacos from carnitas to cabeza.

-- Mi Mexico (4215 N Armenia, Tampa; (813) 387-0091): Ignore burglar bars on windows. Tampa's busiest taqueria has a full line of tacos plus seafood and breakfasts; a tienda next door is full of hats and boots.

-- Mi Mexico/Sunshine Restaurant (626 S Missouri Ave., Clearwater; (727) 447-0084): A family diner with all-day breakfast and Greek-Italian menu, goes Mexican with taco menu in the evening.

-- Mexico Lindo (812 Court St., Clearwater; (727) 443-5892): Clearwater's central tienda and butcher shop has a taqueria with a full line of tacos, fillings by the pound and six homemade sauces.

-- Viva Mexico (1264 Cleveland St., Clearwater; (727) 441-9526): Old Toddle House serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with a new accent, from huevos and tacos to full platters.
