Tampa Bay Tech girls finish first

BROOKSVILLE -- Micaela Davis placed first in the high jump and Melissa Cousin (pole vault) and Tampa Bay Tech's 3,200 relay team each took second to lead the Titans to the girls title.

But the best race of the day might have been the boys 100-meter final.

Jefferson's Andre Caldwell and Rashaun Grant were in neighboring lanes, just as Caldwell wanted it..

The two juniors practice together and have gone back and forth all season, even tying at the district meet.

"I feel like if I can keep up with him, I can keep up with anybody else," Caldwell said.

Caldwell won the closest race of the meet in a personal-best 10.39 seconds, edging Kathleen's Julius McClellen (10.42). Grant was sixth in 10.63, as just 41/100ths of a second separated the eight finalists.

Caldwell, a first-year runner, entered the meet as one of the lower seeds. But he made up for it with a quick start.

"He got a real good jump," Grant said. "Best all year."

Caldwell, a wide receiver on Jefferson's state semifinal football team, said his first regional championship exceeded anything he has done on the gridiron.

"We haven't ever won the state in football," he said, "so I haven't got anything to compare it to."

Eric Speer won the 800 and 1,600 and Arsenio Johnson won the 400 to help Blake's boys to second place, one point behind Boca Ciega.

David Johnson (discus) and Rachelle Rodriguez (pole vault) of Jefferson, Mallory Giordano (1,600) of Plant and Lindsey Moffenbier (3,200) of East Bay also won individual titles.

King's boys 3,200, Blake's girls 1,600 and Plant's girls 3,200 squads won relays.

The top four in each event advance to the state meet.
