The St. Petersburg Times has won four awards in the 52nd annual Green Eyeshade competition sponsored by the Atlanta chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Gary Shelton, a Times staff writer since 1990 and a columnist since 1991, won second place in sports commentary.

The Times staff won a third-place award in deadline reporting for "Fleeing man kills officer," the coverage of the shooting death of Tampa police Officer Lois Marrero in July 2001.

In business reporting, staff writer Anita Kumar won third place for her series, "Deadly Combination: Ford, Firestone & Florida."

Staff writer Kevin Kelly won a third-place award in sports writing for his coverage of the death of racing great Dale Earnhardt at the Daytona 500.

The Green Eyeshade competition is open to print and broadcast media in 11 Southeastern states.
