Woman threatening suicide shot by deputyBy Times staff writer© St. Petersburg Times published May 6, 2002 TAMPA -- A woman who was firing a revolver into the air, pointing the gun at her head and threatening suicide was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy Sunday night after she pointed the weapon at them, deputies said. Hillsborough sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said deputies were called to 11107 Shady Lane in Riverview about 6:15 p.m. to assist a woman attempting suicide. The woman was walking around her property and waving a gun. She held the gun to her head and also fired shots into the air, Carter said. A crisis team and an emergency response team were called to attempt to talk the woman into surrendering the weapon. After about two hours, the woman pointed the gun at deputies, Carter said. A deputy fired one shot, killing the woman. Carter said the woman was on the porch when she was shot, and the deputy who shot her was inside the home. Carter did not release the name of the woman or the deputy who shot her. "They want to cross every 't' and dot every 'i,' " Carter said. There were no other people inside the Shady Lane home at the time of the shooting, she said. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
